Seamless Communication Across Incompatible Radio Networks
Overview
At REDCOM Laboratories, Inc., we design advanced strategic, operational, and tactical communication solutions with a focus on interoperability, flexibility, and ease of use. In this case, we were tasked with delivering a solution that could bring together a wide range of disparate radio systems, allowing them to interoperate and support secure, clear, real-time communication between teams operating at the tactical edge.
Our customer required a capability that preserved existing radio investments while enabling seamless voice and data exchange across incompatible networks in dynamic and contested environments.
The Challenge: Bridging the Communication Divide
A government agency operating across a wide and often contested battlespace faced a critical breakdown in tactical communications at the edge. Units equipped with different radio systems could not communicate directly during live missions. As a result, teams relied on manual relays and improvised workarounds that slowed coordination and increased operational risk.
This lack of radio interoperability degraded mission command by limiting shared situational awareness and delaying the delivery of time-sensitive orders and reports. Without a rapid and reliable way to bridge disparate radio networks, units faced delayed movements, missed coordination windows, increased fratricide risk, and reduced effectiveness against a dynamic adversary.
To restore command and control at the edge, the organization fielded PacStar 400-Series deployable communication kits and relied on REDCOM Sigma to unify multiple radio systems. This allowed voice and data traffic to be routed over any available transport while remaining simple enough for soldiers to operate under combat conditions.
The Solution: Interoperability Without Compromise
Working closely with Curtiss-Wright, we helped the agency implement a modular, interoperable communications kit designed to unify all of its disparate radio networks into a single operational system.
At the core of the solution was our REDCOM Sigma® software, which connects radio, IP, and cellular endpoints into one seamless network. When integrated with Curtiss-Wright’s PacStar 400-Series modular communications hardware, the agency gained a rugged, portable platform that can be rapidly deployed anywhere.
Rather than replacing existing radios or forcing extensive retraining, this approach allowed the agency to bridge both legacy and modern systems. Every operator could communicate, monitor traffic, and share data regardless of the radio or device in use.
The Results: Real-Time Interoperability at the Edge
- Unified voice communication across heterogeneous radio networks, eliminating manual patching and reducing coordination delays during operations
- Resilient communications enabled by multiple transport paths, including 5G/LTE, Wi-Fi, and satellite, ensuring continuous voice and data exchange in degraded, disconnected, intermittent, and limited environments
- Faster information sharing among field operators, command centers, and mobile units, enabling informed decisions in near real time
- Simplified system control through a single, intuitive REDCOM Sigma console, reducing operator workload and training requirements
- A compact, lightweight, modular, and ruggedized design that supports rapid deployment at the tactical edge and becomes operational within minutes of arrival
- Real-time communication between Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) devices, SIP endpoints, and radio networks, improving situational awareness and ensuring uninterrupted voice traffic
- Scalable radio interoperability supporting four radio types per PacStar 421, with expansion to eight, twelve, or more using additional modules to match mission size and complexity
Why It Matters
Modern missions demand immediate and reliable communications in contested environments. This capability allows warfighters to connect existing radios into a unified network without waiting for costly or disruptive replacements.
For operators, this translates to faster coordination, reduced friction, and assured voice connectivity at the tactical edge. For commanders, it delivers clearer command and control and faster decision-making. At the strategic level, it protects prior investments while enabling a transition toward a more resilient and interoperable communications architecture.
