REDCOM Co-Founder and VP of Technology, Chuck Breidenstein, was one of fourteen individuals nominated for Inventor of the Year presented by the Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association (RIPLA). RIPLA has recognized an “Inventor of the Year” since 1973. The award acknowledges an individual or team of individuals from the local community for their contributions to technics.
Nominations for this award are called for annually by RIPLA members. Laura Smalley, an attorney for Harris Beach PLLC, nominated Chuck for this prestigious award. “I nominated Chuck because of his ground-breaking work in the field of digital and IP-enabled telecommunications systems and his leadership in the development of a pioneering Modular Switching Unit and its successors.”
An independent selection committee reviews all nomination materials, but the purpose of the award ceremony is to honor all nominees for their valuable contributions. Nominees make up a virtual “who’s who” in innovation and accomplishment in
the Rochester area. At the June 13th ceremony, Chuck was recognized for his lifelong achievements and position among the notable nominees.
Chuck began his career at REDCOM in June 1978 as “Senior Project Supervisor” where he was charged with leading the team which would develop REDCOM’s patented MSU (Modular Switching Unit), which forms the foundation for all of REDCOM’s products to this day.

He continued to make his mark with REDCOM’s HDX and SLICE, which utilize a next-generation Reduced Instruction Set Computer processor. Chuck wrote code to support the Memory Management Unit of this new processor, and converted the BASIC interpreter to run on this new platform. Many of these efforts are continued today as product development progresses on many fronts.

Chuck is active today in a wide variety of roles including evaluation of industry trends and technology, developing new features and methodologies, writing up internal patent submissions for both his and other’s inventions, giving both internal and external training courses, and even assisting in debugging field problems in some cases. He currently holds nine patents as an inventor or co-inventor, several of which have been granted additionally in Europe and Asia.
