REDCOM HDX Carrier Class 4/5 Softswitches Power SS7 Upgrade for Network in Rural Alaska
Network Powered by HDX Provides Affordable High-Speed 800 Service BackhaulVictor, New York (October 7, 2009) – REDCOM Laboratories Inc., a company that designs and manufactures the world’s most reliable digital and IP-enabled telecommunications systems, announced today that Alaska’s United Utilities, Inc. (UUI) has installed 23 REDCOM High Density Exchange (HDX) softswitches to take advantage of a new high capacity digital microwave network serving western Alaska. The HDX softswitches replace existing REDCOM Modular Digital Exchange (MDX) switching systems that have been in place for more than 15 years. The HDX softswitches enable UUI’s network to offer its customers Next Generation Network services with the deployment of affordable, high-speed terrestrial 800 service backhaul. The new HDX softswitches offer Equal Access and SS7 TCAP/ISUP signaling. In the future, thanks to the increased capacity of the terrestrial network, schools, clinics, libraries, colleges, and government agencies throughout western Alaska will be able to enjoy the benefits of the same kind of Next Generation Network services offered to communities in the lower 48 states. “Powered by 23 Carrier-Class REDCOM HDX softswitches, our network is able to keep pace with the increasing regional demand that we are seeing for new, emerging services,” said Chuck Russell, Senior Vice President, Operations and Engineering, UUI. “Our relationship with REDCOM is a longstanding one that began with our deployment of REDCOM’s MDX and MDX•I platforms and now continues with our transition to the HDX, the company’s next-generation softswitch.”
As the region grows, UUI is well-positioned with the network’s new HDX softswitches to rapidly create and deliver new revenue-generating services. The HDX has extensive SIP trunking capabilities, allowing UUI to retrofit their network faster and more cost-effectively than with legacy long-distance transport. Migrating to IP is easy with the HDX, which works seamlessly converting existing customers to IP customers. In addition, the HDX supports ISDN and SS7 connectivity, providing the out-of-band trunk signaling necessary for network CLASS features.
